Mastering Estonian Locative Cases: Inessive, Illative, and Elative

In Estonian, locative cases are crucial for expressing location and movement. Understanding these cases is vital for the A2 exam and everyday conversation. Let's explore them.

The Inessive case (-s) describes being inside or at a place: 'Ma olen koolis.' translates to 'I am at school.' The word 'koolis' uses the inessive ending to indicate location.

The Illative case (-sse) shows movement toward a place: 'Ma lähen kooli.' means 'I go to school.' The change from 'kool' to 'kooli' signals the movement towards the school.

The Elative case (-st) indicates movement from a place: 'Ma tulen koolist.' translates to 'I come from school.' Here, 'koolist' shows leaving the school.

A common mistake is mixing up the illative and elative endings. Remember, 'sse' is to, and 'st' is from.

Practice by describing your daily movements in Estonian. You can find engaging exercises at https://keelix.ee/modules to hone these skills.
