Mastering Estonian Comparative and Superlative Forms

Understanding and using comparative and superlative forms in Estonian can significantly enhance your communication skills, especially at the B1 level. Let's break it down with some examples.

First, consider the adjective 'ilus' (beautiful). To form the comparative, add '-m': 'ilusam' means more beautiful. Example: See park on ilusam kui eelmine. — This park is more beautiful than the previous one.

For the superlative, add '-im' and 'kõige': 'kõige ilusam' means the most beautiful. Example: See on kõige ilusam maja linnas. — This is the most beautiful house in the city.

Another example is 'kiire' (fast). 'Kiirem' is faster, and 'kõige kiirem' is the fastest. Example: Ta on klassi kiireim jooksja. — He is the fastest runner in the class.

A common mistake is forgetting the comparison word 'kui' (than) in comparisons: 'See raamat on huvitavam kui eelmine.' — This book is more interesting than the previous one.

Practice forming comparative and superlative adjectives with different words. Try creating your own sentences and use them in conversations or written exercises to reinforce your understanding.
