How to Use the Estonian Conditional Mood

The Estonian conditional mood allows speakers to express hypothetical situations, polite requests, and wishes. It's an essential part of mastering conversational Estonian, especially at the B1 level.

To form the conditional, you use the auxiliary verb 'oleks' and the main verb in the necessary form. For example:

1. Kui mul oleks aega, ma läheksin kinno. — If I had time, I would go to the cinema. The 'oleks' indicates a hypothetical scenario.

2. Kui ta tuleks varem, me saaksime koos süüa. — If he came earlier, we could eat together. Here, 'saaksime' adds the sense of possibility or ability.

3. Kas sa aitaksid mind, kui sul oleks võimalik? — Would you help me if you could? This sentence shows how the conditional is often used for polite requests.

A common mistake is forgetting to use 'oleks' when forming the sentence, which can change the meaning entirely. Remember, 'oleks' is crucial to maintaining the hypothetical or conditional meaning.

Practice forming sentences with the conditional mood by imagining different scenarios or making polite requests to friends. The more you practice, the more natural it will become. Explore more about Estonian grammar at https://keelix.ee/modules.
